The ZTE Cymbal T flip phone is the first of its kind. Talk of a classic flip phone-cum-smartphone. The phone features a 3.5-inch fully touch display and a complete alphanumeric keypad. The phone comes with amazing features like Android 5.1 Lollipop, 1.1GHz quad-core processor, 8GB internal memory, front and back cameras, and 1GB of RAM. It’s also worth mentioning that the ZTE Cymbal T is a Tracfone exclusive phone in which you get the no-contract monthly browsing data, calling minutes and texts as will be shared later in this review.
The ZTE Cymbal T exterior design is awesome. It's probably the first phone to bring the flip design into the smartphone age. As you can visualize a flip phone, the top half is a 3.5-inch touch screen, and the bottom half is the physical alphanumeric keypad. It doesn't have the traditional Android navigation keys. Rather, the navigation keys are part of the physical keypad. What I love about the phone is that the keypad is large enough making it easy to operate the phone. Because of its simplicity, the ZTE Cymbal T is perfect for users who have been just introduced to smartphones and business people who need a phone to get by quickly.
There is a secondary display on the outside that's always on. It shows the time, date, signal strength, battery, and caller ID information. Going on to the edges, we have the 3.5mm headphone jack on the right edge, USB/charging port on the bottom, and the volume rockers on the left side. We have the main camera on the back panel. It's also removable to access the battery compartment and the slots for the SIM and microSD cards.
The phone features two cameras; a 5MP back and a 2MP front-facing camera. The cameras have pretty nice features. I found them perfect for video calling. Of course, there's a dedicated camera key on the keypad to make it easier for the user. Both front cameras can capture 720P videos at 30fps, however they are of average quality given it's a flip phone. With the Google Photos application installed, you can enhance and backup your photos.
The ZTE Cymbal T features two screens. The primary display which is a 3.5-inch fully touch screen that you use to operate the phone. Its resolution is 320 by 480 pixels. It may not be as bright, but it gets the job done. It's also multi-touch so you can zoom in and out of pictures and control games with two fingers smoothly.
The external display is 0.96-inch in size. It stays on to show information like date, time, caller information and signal strength. Similarly, notifications from messaging apps and the song currently playing on the music player appear on the external display.
ZTE Cymbal T comes with 8GB of internal storage. The available memory to the user is 4GB while the Operating System and Tracfone apps use the rest. Luckily enough, the phone has a microSD slot to support external memory expansion up to 32GB.
We have an 1800mAh battery on the ZTE Cymbal T which gives the phone enough juice to hold 10 hours of talk time and up to 6 days of standby. For regular use, which the phone is meant for, after all, it will go close to two days after a full battery charge. The not so big display doesn't consume much battery allowing you many hours of use. The battery is also removable, so you are free to have a spare battery to swap with in case the primary battery runs out.
The ZTE Cymbal T being a flip phone; is meant for basic tasks such as browsing, calling, texting, and checking emails. It will achieve all these tasks perfectly. It has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor operating at 1.1GHz quad-core. This is paired with 1GB of RAM. If you ask me, these are incredible specs for a flip phone.
Apart from the regular tasks, the phone can handle basic games pretty well although the resolution will be too low. The Android 5.1 Lollipop is wired to work with the physical keypads which are simple to use. Calling apps like Skype will work fine because of the presence of the front camera and the fast 4G LTE connectivity.
If you have been missing physical keys on an Android powered device, then this phone is perfect for you. However, you shouldn't plan to load it heavily with apps. Call quality is important to everyone, and the ZTE Cymbal T won't surprise you at all. Overall, it is good to have an Android-powered flip phone. Below is a simple list of specifications.
