Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL smartphone was launched in early 2017. It's more or less like the 2016 Galaxy J3 variant, but with more enhanced features to give an amazing user experience. It has a 5-inch display, 1.5GB RAM, 16GB onboard storage, and comes running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL is offered by Tracfone, Total Wireless, Simple Mobile and Straight Talk Wireless whereby, it comes with affordably priced no contract plans. Let's get straight to the Review.
Samsung is know for premium packaging, whether it is a mid-range or premium smartphone being released to the market. The packaging includes the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL, battery, wall adapter, a standard USB cable, a pair of headsets, service guide and a quick setup guide.
As expected from Samsung phones, the exterior design on the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL is superb. It has slightly rounded corners and feels very premium in hand. It's a 5-inch smartphone thus fitting perfectly in one hand. With a weight of 4.90 oz, it is not going to pressure your palm down during one-handed operations.
The front of the device is a 5-inch TFT display. The top of the display hosts the front camera, earpiece, and a proximity sensor. The bottom of the display hosts the navigation keys. The phone doesn't have the floating navigation keys, rather, it has the physical keys as a norm in most Samsung phones. The arrangement is such that; the recent apps button on the left, the home key in the middle, and the back button on the right.
The back panel has a flat finish with the Samsung logo at the center while the upper part hosts the camera, and the LED flash. The back panel is removable to gain access to the battery compartment and slots for the SIM and microSD card.
Moving on to the layout around the edges; the top edge has the noise cancellation mic. The bottom edge has the headset jack, microUB/charging port, and your microphone. The power button lies on the right edge while the volume rockers lie on the left edge. You will also notice a small grill to the upper part of the right edge which comes in as your hands-free speaker. I find this speaker placement a nice idea because it won't be blocked when you place your phone on your desk. Meaning you continue enjoying quality sound emanating from the speaker.
The Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL boasts a 5MP back camera and a 2MP front-facing camera. For the price the phone equates to, these camera specifications are pretty good. I especially liked the 4x zoom and the bright LED flash on the back camera for taking pictures in limited lighting situation.
The camera includes a bunch of filters to apply to the screen and see the appearance of the photo even before taking. The camera app interface is pretty easy to use. You may quickly switch between the front camera and rear camera by swiping the screen up or down. While the front camera is short on pixels, it comes in handy during video calls and self-portraits.
The camera can shoot videos with a quality of up to 1920 x 1080 pixels at 30fps. This is a great resolution for a budget smartphone. You may also capture photos while recording videos. I found this to be nice, especially in situations where you are not sure if you want to take pictures or videos, you can just take both and decide which one to keep later.
The camera has several shooting modes to enrich a user's experience. The Auto mode is what the camera comes with by default - it allows the camera to evaluate the surroundings and determine how the photo should appear. For super users, the Pro mode will let you adjust settings such as ISO level, exposure value, color tone and white balance. You may also take panorama photos or Sports pictures of fast moving objects. Additionally, the camera lets you enrich your photos by adding a few seconds of background sound which increases social media sharing engagement.
The display on the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL is a 5-inch TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. This is a high definition screen that shows up every video and picture in great clarity. Indoor brightness is incredible. While outdoors, the screen brightens up to make it easier for the eyes to see, thanks to the ambient light sensor. Responsiveness is great since I had no issue playing multi-touch games or zooming by two-finger pinching.
Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL ships with a 2600mAh battery that gives you up to 21 days of standby and up to 26 hours of talk time. The battery life on this gadget is impressive. With over a day of regular usage, I still was left with enough juice to last a few hours into the night.
For heavy usage which involves consistent video streaming or gaming, the battery may last just over 6 hours. Luckily enough, the battery is removable. So, having a spare battery to swap with is encouraged for a super user. The phone comes with power management features that can help extend your battery life when the battery percentage falls below a certain level. This is available under device maintenance in your Settings. With ultra-power saving turned on, the phone can last up to 12 hours or more with 10% of charge.
The onboard storage capacity of the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL is 16GB. The large capacity internal storage is a major selling point considering this is a budget smartphone. The Operating System only takes about 5GB, which means you are left with 11GB to store your files and apps.
To add on to that, the phone has a microSD card slot that supports up to 256GB for external memory expansion. It supports microSDXC memory cards from companies like SanDisk and Samsung. Even without adding the external microSD card, the internal storage is a lot and can hold thousands of photos, hundreds of music files and a considerable number of videos.
The performance of the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL is incredible considering the resources it comes with. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.4GHz quad-core processor combined with 1.5GB of RAM. With such resources, the phone can multitask and still have several apps open in the background with no noticeable freezing.
Furthermore, the gadget comes with the recent Android 6.0 Marshmallow which supports more than a million apps from Google Playstore. Android Marshmallow comes with an improved user experience thanks to the fluidity and smooth animations. It's better at multitasking and lets you enjoy certain Google features like Now On Tap.
The phone is very responsive as I noticed fast app launch speeds. This being a 4G LTE-enabled device, internet speeds are super fast. I enjoy faster browsing and a great video streaming experience. In the gaming department, the phone performed pretty well thanks to the high definition screen and the Adreno 306 Graphics Processing Unit.
Other typical connectivity features that come with the phone include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, and GPS for location-based services. The phone has a proximity sensor which detects when you place your phone on the ear during a call and locks the screen thus extending your battery life. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Luna Pro S327VL performance is impressive for a phone in the low-end tier.
