What We Love

  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
  • 4G LTE.
  • Great memory options (16GB internal and 256GB microSD expandable).
  • 5.0-inch high definition display.

The Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge is an affordable smartphone that features a 5.0-inch screen, 1.4GHz quad-core CPU, and 1.5GB of RAM. It has impressive storage options, including a 16GB inbuilt memory and the option to add an external microSD card of up to 256GB. One thing that stands out on the Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge is the bright and high definition display. Optionally, with the Easy Mode feature installed, operating the J3 Emerge is easier and straightforward. The Galaxy J3 Emerge is also know as Galaxy J3 Eclipse (Verizon Wireless version).

Samsung together with the Carriers they partner with appreciates the need to bless their customers with a beautiful packaging. The Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge comes in a nice box which includes the phone itself, get started guide, wall adapter charger, a standard USB cable, a battery, and an activation card. After installing the battery, setting up is straightforward thanks to it having Android Marshmallow.

Coming in at just 5-inches in size, the Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge is perfect for compact phone lovers because it is a lot easier to handle. It's also very lightweight at only 4.9 ounces so it won't feel heavy in hand. Excluding the display, the phone is covered by silver plastic and a strip of metal snaking around the frame.

It has a removable back cover that you can pull off to access the battery compartment and the slots for the SIM and microSD card. I also noticed that the back cover doesn't get smudgy as it does not pick fingerprints thanks to the silver plastic. To the top of the back cover is a metal strip that has the back camera and flash embedded.

Going on to the edges, you will notice a grill on the in the right edge towards the top, which is the speaker, emitting some surprisingly loud sound. As a standard for Samsung devices, the power button is on the right edge and the volume rockers on the left edge. The bottom edge houses the headphone jack as well as the micro USB charging port.

On the front panel sits the bright 5-inch display. The top of the display has the front camera lens, earpiece, and the proximity sensor. To the bottom of the display you will find your physical home button and the capacitive backlit recent apps key and back key.

The Galaxy J3 Emerge has a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. I found the camera to perform impressively in good lighting. With manual autofocus adjustment, the camera will take a clean shot with minimal noise or blur. In terms of shooting videos, the rear camera will record a 720p video resolution at 30fps which is fairly good for a phone at this price point. The front shooter is a 2-megapixel that's perfect for selfies and video calling.

The Galaxy J3 Emerge features a 5-inch TFT LCD display. While this is not AMOLED that Samsung uses in their flagship gadgets, it's fairly bright. It has a resolution of 1280 x 720p which is high definition and a pixel density of 294 pixels per inch. Everything shows up brightly starting from images, icons, videos to texts with no noticeable pixelation. With an ambient light sensor, the phone adjusts brightness accordingly to allow you to see without much strain - whether you are operating in darkness or sunlight.

The Galaxy J3 Emerge has impressive storage options. It ships with an onboard storage of 16GB which can easily be expanded to 256GB with an external microSD card. If you ask me, the internal storage is plenty already as it can hold lots of pictures, videos and music files.

Battery life is a major factor when buying any phone. You will be happy to find out that the Samsung Galaxy J3 Emerge performs nicely in the battery life sector. It has a battery with a capacity of 2600mAh which will give you up to 23 hours of talk time, 71 hours of music play and up to 13 hours of video play time. With full-screen video streaming at maximum brightness on the LTE network, the phone clocked close to 6 hours. On regular use, the phone served me a full work day and still had some juice for my social media browsing hours into the night. Interestingly, the battery is removable, allowing you to have a spare battery to replace when the primary battery runs out.

The Galaxy J3 Emerge ships running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The Samsung TouchWiz UI runs on top of the Android Marshmallow to bring in unique Samsung features. One unique feature is the notification panel which looks nice with added functionalities. The gadget is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor clocked at 1.4GHz and this is paired with a 1.5GB of RAM. With these resources, the phone's performance is incredibly fast. There are no glitches when launching or switching between apps. Android Marshmallow fluidity and multitasking capabilities are experienced thanks to the optimized quad-core processor onboard.

The Adreno 505 GPU handles the gaming department. This being a midrange device, I didn't expect much but was amazed by how it managed rich graphical games. Video play is also enjoyable as they show up and bright. The Galaxy J3 Emerge is 4G LTE enabled so you are assured of high-speed internet access. Call quality is great and there are no sound distortions whatsoever.

The phone features several sensors to be aware of the surrounding such as an accelerometer, gyro, ambient light/proximity, and compass.  Typical connectivity features include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The phone also has GPS for location services and Google maps navigation.
