Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is an affordably priced 4G LTE smartphone. It is the bigger and more advanced sibling of the Galaxy J3 Luna Pro and the Galaxy Sky Android smartphones which continue to do well. Some of these improvements include the screen size and RAM. The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro features a 5.5-inch high definition display, long-lasting 3300mAh battery, 2GB runtime memory, 16GB internal storage, and a powerful 1.4GHz quad-core processor. The J7 Sky Pro promises to deliver impressive performance at a price that won’t break the bank. Let’s find out more as we go along in the review.
As a tradition of Samsung, they always try to make a premium packaging, whether launching a flagship gadget or lower end gadget. That tradition continues even in this phone. The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is available from Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, and TracFone. We have the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro from Straight Talk, and they did a good job with packaging. The box includes the smartphone, battery, standard USB cable, a wall adapter charger, activation card, services guide and quick start guide.
The exterior of the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro pretty much resembles the Galaxy J7 in everything; they both have a 5.5-inch display. The dimensions of the J7 Sky Pro are 5.9” x 3.0” x 0.33.” It is available in black color. It feels light in hand, weighing less than 6 ounces, hence it won’t weigh down your pockets. The back cover comes off completely to reveal the battery compartment, and the slots for the SIM and microSD cards. Being a prepaid smartphone, it ships with a preinstalled SIM card which you will notice when you install the back cover. The back cover also hosts the rear camera lens with its LED flash.
The phone features a side firing speaker to the right edge, which is pretty nice because it is not blocked when you place it on your desk. The power/lock button sits on the right edge, and the left edge hosts the volume rockers. The bottom edge has the headset jack, microphone, and the USB port. The top edge has no button apart from the noise cancellation mic.
The front panel features the expansive display. It has physical haptic navigation keys at the bottom, which is typical of Samsung: the recent apps keys to the left, home key at the center, and back key to the left. To the top of the display. We have the front camera lens, earpiece, and the proximity/ambient light sensor. That sums up our tour around the hardware of the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro.
The display on the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is one of its major highlights. It features a 5.5-inch high definition display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It is a TFT LCD display that is awesomely bright. Samsung has a reputation of making exceptional displays, and that reputation is upheld in this gadget. Even though it is a lower end gadget, Samsung did not compromise that much. The big screen presents a cinematic view when watching videos, it is also perfect for reading.
We found the screen to be quite responsive. Indoor visibility is great. While outdoors, the screen’s brightness auto adjusts accordingly to ensure you see clearly. It has the ambient light sensor which detects the amount of light in the surrounding to allow the auto adjustment. Compared to the 5-inch display on the Galaxy J3 Luna Pro, the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is perfect if you love a big screen in your hand at a pocket friendly cost. For the price it comes at, the high definition display is acceptable.
Samsung always tries to have the best cameras on their phones. The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro features 2 capable cameras: 8MP camera on the back and a 5MP camera on the front. We found the cameras to be quite good, they can capture clear photos and selfies which show up nicely on the display. The back camera has bright LED flash to facilitate capturing clear photos even in low light. The camera app includes the standard camera features such as Auto, Continuous Shot, Panorama, Sports mode, and Sound & Shot to add some sound before capturing a picture.
In video recording, the Galaxy J7 Pro performed impressively. Both cameras can record in full high definition 1080p at 30fps. Of course, there will be a small difference between the 8MP back shooter and the 5MP front shooter. In well-lit environments, the camera delivered some nice photos. In low light, details are bound to miss as expected from a phone at this price point. High end flagships like the Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S8 are equipped with sophisticated sensors to help overcome the low light hindrance and capture some clear videos and pictures no matter the lighting. The cameras gave a solid performance for a phone at this price bracket, and we were actually impressed.
The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro boasts 16GB of internal storage. Out of the 16GB, we are left with 8GB accessible to the user, while the operating system and preinstalled apps take up the other 8GB. The internal storage is quite enough for average use. If you have more files and games to install, then you are in luck. The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro has a microSD card slot that supports external memory expansion up to 256GB.
The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is designed to withstand long hours of use. Onboard is a long-lasting 3300mAh battery. While most recent smartphones are embracing the non-removable battery stance, the battery on the Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is easily removable. This allows you to easily swap it with another full battery when it runs out. While that is the case, the huge battery won’t run out that easily. It can easily give you a full day of medium to intensive use. It is rated to give a talk time of up to 31 hours and a standby time of up to 22 days. In our tests, it gave up after about 6 hours of playing a looping video at full brightness. In normal usage, I had about 30% of juice left to use for the evening. Samsung has also implemented power optimization mechanism to ensure the battery gives you more onscreen time.
The Galaxy J7 Sky Pro packs the necessary features to ensure it keeps up with your pace. This being an upgrade to the J3 Luna Pro, it comes with more runtime memory and an advanced processor. It has a 1.4GHz quad-core processor that is paired with 2GB of RAM. It comes running Android 6.0 Marshmallow which is optimized to give you the best experience. It has a fluid user interface that makes using the phone enjoyable. Like most Samsung smartphones, the Samsung TouchWiz UI runs on top of the Android 6.0 Marshmallow, bringing in unique features like the notification panel, settings screen and custom app icons.
Overall performance is smooth, similarly multitasking is supported thanks to the quad-core processor and the solid runtime memory. The graphics department is backed by Adreno 506 Graphics Processing Unit. This ensures that you can play video games and enjoy high resolution videos with ease. It’s a 4G LTE capable device hence promising fast internet speeds on the various networks.
