Open your door to the world of 5G with the new Nokia 8 V 5G UW. The device is exclusive to Verizon Wireless, hence the ‘V’ in the phone’s name. Being Nokia’s first 5G smartphone on Verizon, Nokia 8 V 5G UW is a rebranded version of the Nokia 8.3 5G. Most features between the two phones are similar, but the key difference is that the Nokia 8.3 5G can only connect to the sub-6GHz 5G mobile network, whereas the Nokia 8 V 5G UW can connect to sub-6GHz or mmWave 5G networks. Verizon uses the term “Ultra-Wideband” (UW) in reference to mmWave.Â
Nokia 8 V 5G UW is Android 11 ready and comes with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset. Nokia promised two Android upgrades and 18 months of security updates for the phone. Although the 8 V and the 8.3 5G designs are similar, the 8.3 5G comes in Polar Night color while the 8 V 5G comes in Meteor Gray color. You get a large display, a quad-camera setup and an all-day battery life with this smartphone. Let’s get into the comprehensive Nokia 8 V 5G UW review.
Nokia 8 V 5G UW arrives in white-colored packaging with the phone’s picture on the front and Nokia branding on the top right. The back of the packaging lists all the features of the device. Opening the box reveals the Nokia 8 V 5G UW, covered by a screen protector. On the left of the device is another box containing the 18W charging adapter and cable. Below the device are the SIM card ejection tool, quick start guides, consumer safety information, and product safety information booklet.Â

Nokia 8 V 5G UW features an aluminum design, with a punch-hole selfie camera on the large display and a glossy glass back that merges seamlessly into the body while encasing the enhanced quad-camera system. The glossy surface reflects different shades depending on your viewing angle. It measures the same as the Nokia 8.3 – 171.9 x 78.6 x 9 mm, but weighs 0.50 pounds more.Â
The four rear cameras are housed next to the LED flashlight in the round-shaped camera module with Zeiss branding. We recommend you use a phone case to protect the camera bump from accidental scratches. The Nokia logo is imprinted vertically in the middle, whereas the Verizon 5G logo is at the bottom.Â
You’ll find the SIM & microSD card slot, volume rocker, and power key that also serves as a fingerprint sensor on the right edge. The power button/fingerprint reader has pleasant ergonomics, which means you can feel for it without looking at the mobile phone. The left edge has a dedicated Google Assistant button, whereas the bottom edge hosts the speaker, USB Type-C port, microphone, and a 3.5mm headphone jack left to right.
The Nokia 8 V 5G camera setup delivers excellent results for both photos and videos. It features the following cameras:
With a powerful 64 MP primary camera, you’ll capture all your adventures in stunning quality. Photos are highly detailed, with decent contrast and good overall colors. With Night Mode, you can effortlessly capture shots under low lighting conditions without compromising quality. Images are shareworthy without having to edit them extensively.
The 12MP ultra-wide camera captures beautiful landscapes and fits more into the screen. It also supports Night Mode like the primary camera. For best results, stay still when taking photos under low light conditions. A 2 MP depth camera effectively blurs the background for sharper portraits, whereas a 2 MP macro camera captures close-up shots.Â
Every lens from the Nokia 8 V 5G uses Zeiss optics. The primary camera aperture is f/1.8, and the wide-angle camera aperture is f/2.2. You can become the director and editor of your 4K videos with the Nokia 8 V 5G UW. Record action videos at close range with Action Cam mode, or tell stories through cinematographic videos. You can experiment with a wide variety of filters in the camera app to give your videos a creative edge.
With a stunning 6.81-inch screen and pioneering PureDisplay technology, you can view everything in more detail – from gaming to streaming videos from Amazon Prime Video and Netflix. The display extends seamlessly over the edges, giving the device an attractive appearance. Nokia has used the PureDisplay branding to refer to the HDR support, which enables more beautiful images and videos with details that pop out and shine. As I watched my favorite movies on this display, I was astonished by the color production and vibrancy.Â
Similar to the OnePlus Nord, it’s display resolution is 2400 x 1080 pixels, but the pixel density is 386 PPI. While playing games such as Call of Duty and PUBG Mobile, the large display gives you a competitive edge over other players. Throughout the gameplay, the scrolling and swiping felt fluid at every turn. This IPS LCD display is decent for everyday use. However, I recommend keeping the phone at full brightness under direct sunlight.
Nokia 8 V 5G UW combines a decent battery with an efficient chipset to let you do more. With a 4500mAh battery, you can enjoy your day without worrying about low battery alerts. The device also supports 18W fast charging, so you can quickly recharge the battery when you’re out of juice and don’t have much time. You can rely on the Nokia 8 V 5G’s battery life to last a full day.
Nokia 8 V 5G UW offers 64GB of internal storage to store your favorite apps, games, photos, videos, files, contacts, and other important content. I believe that 64 GB of storage is enough for everyday use. However, if you need extra room, you can use a microSD card to expand storage up to 512GB.Â
The 8 V 5G UW is a mid-range phone with flagship power, as you’d expect from Nokia. Featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor and 6GB of RAM, this phone can handle most tasks thrown at it by a power user. The processor combines 5G speeds and AI capabilities for a better smartphone experience and lets you enjoy gaming at multi-gigabit speeds. You can run games such as Call of Duty in high settings without any hiccups.
Like the Google Pixel 4a, this Nokia phone runs on Android 10 out of the box and is upgradable to Android 11 and beyond. The user interface of the device is clean and easy to use. However, it comes loaded with many Verizon branded apps. Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband technology is the key feature behind the product. With ultra-fast internet speeds, users will have a much better experience with the smartphone. Another cool feature of the Nokia 8V 5G UW is the dedicated Google Assistant button. Just press the button to get quick information, set reminders or alarms, check your flight status, get directions, and much more.Â
The built-in NFC capability on the Nokia mobile allows you to make quick and easy contactless payments. Overall, Nokia 8 V 5G worked as it should. I am satisfied with the product’s performance and have no complaints.
Nokia phones are known for their clean UI, decent performance, and reasonable prices. The Nokia 8 V 5G phone, with its commendable specs is no exception. It is very similar to the Nokia 8.3, but it comes with better 5G connectivity thanks to Verizon’s ultra-wideband technology. Coming from the brand with the best reputation for reliability, the Nokia 8 V UW can take dings and scratches pretty well. Whether you use it for everyday texting, scrolling social media, or streaming videos on YouTube, this phone will keep up with all your favorite apps. So, for individuals who want a clean-looking Android phone with decent cameras and the fastest 5G network with Verizon, the Nokia 8 V 5G UW is for you.
