Acer Liquid Jade Primo Design

Once you pick your Acer Liquid Jade Primo, you will notice the shiny paint job on the outer frame. It looks great in hand despite being a 5.5-inch phone. It’s tiny bezels to the left and right-hand side leave more room for enjoying content.

Now, coming to the sides, the right side is where we have the volume rockers, power button and two nanoSIM trays. The bottom tray takes a nanoSIM while the top one takes either a second nanoSIM card or a memory card. The left edge is flat with no buttons. The top edge has your 3.5mm headphone jack, which is nice. The bottom edge has a USB Type-C port with fast charging.

The front panel has the 5.5-inch AMOLED display. No physical navigation buttons are available on this gadget, instead it utilizes the Windows 10 navigation keys embedded in the Operating System. The top of the display hosts the proximity sensor, earpiece, front facing camera and the status indicator.

This phone has a non-removable battery, thus, the back cover won’t be coming off. The bottom of the cover has a round speaker which you should not confuse for a fingerprint scanner, because it lacks one. This is acceptable for a phone in this price range. We have Acer branding in the middle of the cover. The top cover has the rear 21MP camera and a dual-tone LED flash just next to it.

Camera Divider

Acer Liquid Jade Primo Camera

Acer went overboard with the camera on this phone. A 21MP rear shooter with a f/2.2 aperture that shoots images up to 5,344 x 4,016 pixels is what the Liquid Jade Primo boasts. This happens to be one of the best cameras I have seen on a smartphone. This being a Windows 10 phone, expect the app interface to match apps on other Windows-powered smartphones. It’s simple to get around with all the features you need easily accessible on the screen.

Both default mode and Pro mode settings are available. In pro mode, the app will let you adjust settings for shutter, ISO, white balance and exposure time. I found the camera app to be quite intuitive.

To be honest, the Liquid Jade Primo shoots acceptable pictures in daylight with real-life colors. At night, the Liquid Jade Primo rear camera will perform well at close distance, thanks to the dual LED flash. With HDR mode turned on, the camera will try to adjust the photos in post-shoot processing to make them look better.

The front-facing camera is an 8MP shooter that actually does its job well. A few selfies and videos I took came out decent enough. With a missing LED flash on the front, the front camera is better reserved for daylight.

Despite the small misgivings, the phone will capture spectacular 4K videos at 30fps, 1080p at 30fps, and 720p at 30fps. Surprisingly, these videos have every detail captured with little saturation while the file size is kept at minimum, hence not quickly filling up your internal space.

While I experienced some delays between the shutter and the actual capture of the photo, the minimalist app is quite enjoyable to use. Additionally, the 4K video capture is just impressive.

Display Divider

Acer Liquid Jade Primo Display

The Acer Liquid Jade Primo features a 5.5-inch AMOLED display. It is a full HD display with a resolution of 1080 X 1920 pixels, which rounds up to a pixel density of 401 PPI. This is arguably one of the best displays at this price point but more importantly, the AMOLED technology brings out the deep blacks making everything stand out. You will especially love how the tiles in Windows 10 show up on the display. The screen is bright and clear both while indoors and outdoors, again thanks to AMOLED technology. The color rendering is accurate, and I found no issue with this display whatsoever.

Storage Divider

Acer Liquid Jade Primo Storage

The Acer Liquid Jade Primo has incredible storage options. Out of the box, it comes with an internal storage of 32GB. For a regular user, I find this to be a pretty sufficient storage capacity. A superuser may need more space, and luckily the phone supports external memory cards of up to 128GB. The microSD slot is available on one of the SIM slot trays. This leaves you with an option between two SIM cards or one SIM card and the microSD card for external storage expansion.

Battery Divider

Acer Liquid Jade Primo Battery

Acer Liquid Jade Primo packs a 2,870mAh non-removable battery. While the capacity may seem small, Windows 10 is actually good at power optimization. Acer rates the phone to give you up to 14 days on standby and up to 20 hours of talk time on 3G. For regular user, this phone will easily last a full day. I was able to enjoy up to seven and a half hours of screen on time when browsing on 4G LTE with average brightness. This means the phone can give you a full workday at the office without worrying about charging it. The USB 3.1 Type-C charging port will charge up your phone a little faster than a Type-A USB port would.

Performance Divider

Acer Liquid Jade Primo Performance

The most outstanding feature of the Acer Liquid Jade Primo is the Windows 10 Continuum experience. But first, what powers the phone? Onboard the Acer Liquid Jade Primo is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 chipset, which was not the latest at the time of launch, but still stacked well with the competition. With most Android flagships boasting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset, the Snapdragon 808 chipset has a lot to prove. Good thing, the Windows 10 OS is quite good with resource management, hence no lags in performance. The phone also comes with 3GB of RAM that guarantees a smooth experience while using the Windows 10 Operating System.

The gaming department is taken care of by the Adreno 418 GPU. Graphics are snappy with no noticeable loss of frames thanks to the 6-core processor. You will experience smooth animations as you browse through apps which is a major improvement of Windows 10 mobile from earlier versions.

Continuum is the feature that makes converting a phone into a portable PC possible. As long as you have a monitor and the accessories that ship with your Acer Liquid Jade Primo, then you are good to go. Most of the Windows 10 apps are Continuum enabled by default, so they will show up and can be used on the big screen. If you wish to use Microsoft Office applications on a big screen, that too is supported entirely. All the shortcuts that work on windows desktop like copying, pasting, launching the explorer will work with Windows Continuum running.

The phone’s performance is superb such that you can still use the phone while the Windows Continuum is running. The drawback is that you can’t open the same app on both the phone and the desktop – the phone will end up on the home screen while leaving the desktop app running. In my experience, Windows Continuum was so smooth that it felt like an actual Windows PC. While it can’t replace all of your desktop’s functionalities, it’s an impressive feature to have on your gadget.
