Motorola is known for its revolutionary game changing slim phones. This revolution started back in 2004 with the advent of the Motorola RAZR and has continued to stay alive with the Motorola Moto Z Droid. The Motorola Moto Z Droid is a 5.5-inch smartphone which is arguably the thinnest smartphone in the world coming in at 5.19mm. This gadget is incredibly popular because not only does it come with incredible features such as the great 5.5-inch screen, a powerful 2.1GHz Snapdragon 820 processor, and an amazing 13MP camera, it has its line of Mods (modifications) that can simply be snapped on to amplify the already existing features.
The Motorola Moto Z Droid is probably one of the most exciting phones to unbox. That’s presumably because of the mods that come with the device. Inside the box, you get the Moto Z Droid, a single style mod, a USB type C charger, 3.5mm to USB-C Headset Adapter, a pair of headsets, a USB adapter and a user's manual. By default, the device is on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow which is fluid and easy to setup.
This device takes thinness to a whole new level. The Motorola Moto Z Droid has a stainless steel body measuring 153.3 x 75.3 x 5.19mm and weighing an incredible 139g. This thin design makes the device feel smaller in the hand even though it has a 5.5-inch screen. This smartphone is so thin that it doesn’t include the regular 3.5mm headphone jack that is customary for many devices. For that reason, the company decided to use the USB port for charging and as the earphone port using the USB-C headset adapter.
At the bottom, the device only has the USB Type-C port. The mods that make this device so revolutionary are fixed at the back. The Moto Z Droid has 16 gold-plated connectors that send data back and from the mods. What’s incredible about these pins is that even without a mod attached to its back, the Z Droid still looks amazing. The mods are held in place thanks to the fully magnetized back of both the phone and the mods so that no shaking can separate the connected mods.
Since the entire back of the device is left for mods, the Z Droid has its fingerprint sensor right at the bottom front of the device. This sensor is non-clickable so with time a user will get used to it. It also acts as the sleep/wake button on the Z Droid. On the right side of the device, there exist three equidistant buttons that take care of the volume and power issues.
The Moto Z Droid comes equipped with a powerful 13MP camera. This camera also sports 1.12um pixels, a f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization inclusive of laser autofocus. This simply means that you can take beautiful pictures in a low-light environment and on a shaky platform with no adverse effect on the image. The camera at the front is a 5MP with 1.4um big pixels, a f/2.2 aperture and a good LED flash for low light situations. The Z Droid is thus perfect for selfie lovers everywhere.
Users that love taking professional shots are in for a treat with this device. The new Motorola camera app has been redesigned to give more power to the user. You can fine tune the ISO, white balance aperture and get professional level functionalities for both the front and back cameras. To make things more exciting, the back camera can shoot videos at 4K UHD to give the clearest videos available.
This device comes fully loaded with a Quad HD AMOLED screen that is just as lively as the world-class displays on Samsung high-end devices. At about 535 PPI pixel density and 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution, the Motorola Moto Z Droid has stunning colors and deep blacks to match. Topping it off is the Moto Active Display. This technology embeds a transmitter and two IR sensors on the front of the device. This technology picks up hand gestures and precise movements to light up the screen showing notifications which can be tapped to divulge more information.
Batteries are critical in determining a smartphone to use, and even with an incredibly slim body, the Motorola Moto Z Droid still manages to pack a good amount of juice. Due to its slim design, the battery on the device is a 2600mAh. The company claims that the battery can clock 30 hours of mixed use. However, our tests showed that an average of 24 hours was more realistic which is a lot given the specifications of the device. When playing a HD video for 90 minutes, the phone's battery went from 100 to 77%.
One of the compatible mods this phone has is the additional battery which can come in handy while traveling or if you are a heavy phone user. The USB type c fast charging technology was also quite impressive charging the battery up to 27% in 15 minutes and 100% in an hour.
This device has all the makings of a flagship device. The Motorola Moto Z Droid comes in two variations in regards to storage; the 32/64 GB versions. However, we found that both varieties come with 4 GB of RAM which is more than satisfactory. 32GB is an incredible amount of storage that can hold lots of music videos and audios, photos and your video shoots. Additionally, the phone has a dedicated micro SD slot that can handle up to 256 GB.
This phone is as smooth and snappy as it gets. The phone has a 2.1GHz Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor together with the Adreno 530 GPU giving the phone power to take on any task you throw at it. Even with a layer of Verizon bloatware, the phone doesn’t stutter at all. Even though when you unbox the device you find the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow on it, you can always upgrade to 7.0 (Nougat) which further guarantees a smoother experience. The Adreno 530 GPU is handy especially when the user is playing graphic intensive games. The GPU coupled with the 4GB of RAM will make sure all animations show up smoothly. Furthermore, the gaming experience is well taken care of thanks to the GPU, and sensors like accelerometer and gyro.
The 4G LTE capability guarantees fast internet connectivity meaning you get to achieve your tasks faster. The phone also has other typical connectivity features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC. NFC comes in handy for secure payments in compatible stores. The phone has a range of sensors for surrounding awareness, such as the fingerprint, GPS, accelerometer, gyro, compass, and proximity.
