Overview

The Motorola Moto E4 falls among the best performing budget smartphones ever launched by Motorola. Personally, I didn't imagine a phone with these feature-rich specifications coming at such a low price point. Considering it comes running the recent Android 7.1 Nougat, decent front and back cameras, great internal storage of 16GB, a high-performance 1.4GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and a battery life that will give you power for the whole day, this gadget is a gift package in itself.

Unboxing

The Motorola Moto E4 is available on the Verizon and Tello wireless website for ordering. Even with the low price tag, the packaging is great. The packaging includes the Moto E4 gadget, battery, wall adapter charger, standard USB cable, user manuals and an activation card. So, let’s head into the hardware tour of the gadget.

Design

The exterior design of the Motorola Moto E4 is pretty typical of a budget smartphone. Unlike the mid-range to high-end Motorola smartphones, the Moto E4 back is not compatible with the company's Moto Mod accessories. This is because the back cover is removable to access the battery compartment and the slots for the microSD and SIM card. The back cover is also home to the 8MP rear camera and the handsfree speaker grill to its lower right corner. This being a 5-inch gadget, it's very compact and feels lightweight in hand. Optionally, it has a one-handed mode that you can activate to shrink the phone's operable display.

Going on to the frame layout, we have the power button and volume rockers bundled to the right side of the phone. The bottom edge has the microUSB charging port as well as your microphone. The left side has no button or port whatsoever. And the top edge only has your headphone jack.

On the front panel sits a bright 5-inch display. To the top of the display, you will find the lens for the front-facing camera, proximity sensor, earpiece, and the selfie flashlight. The bottom of the display has the physical home key which doubles up as the fingerprint sensor. The phone has the floating navigation keys embedded in the OS.

Camera

The Motorola Moto E4 boasts a powerful 8MP rear camera which is an amazing shooter. Its typical features include autofocus, burst mode, panorama, HDR and beautification mode. With an f/2.2 aperture, the camera will take decent shots outdoor; there is no blur or noise in the photos. It will struggle a little in limited lighting, though the bright LED flash covers for it. If you didn't think budget smartphones can capture 1080p videos, the Moto E4 will amaze you. At 30fps, the camera will shoot 1080p video resolution which you can enjoy on the bright display. The front shooter is a 5MP lens camera with f/2.2 aperture. Just like the back camera, it also has single LED flash to allow taking selfies in limited lighting condition.

Display

The compact 5-inch display of the Motorola Moto E4 is pleasantly bright. With a resolution of 1280 by 720p and pixel density of 294, the gadget will offer great color quality and good viewing angles. The screen is bright enough to allow visibility while outdoors. Not forgetting, Motorola company has reinforced the Motorola E4 with a Corning Gorilla Glass for increased protection against scratches or accidental drops.

storage.jpg

Storage

The Moto E4 has excellent memory options. The inbuilt 16GB of storage is sufficient to serve you most of the times. Optionally, a microSD slot that supports a 128GB of expansion storage using a memory card is available.

battery.jpg

Battery

In this time of non-removable batteries, the Moto E4 is blessed to have a 2800mAh removable Li-Ion battery. This offers a fantastic battery life that was able to last close to 6 hours of video streaming on LTE network during my test. Most budget smartphones hit the 5-hour mark. With normal usages, the phone will last you a full workday. It's also nice the phone having a removable battery which you can easily swap out for a new one. It's worth mentioning the phone supports fast charging that will get your battery juiced up to 100% in under two hours.

Performance

At its price point, I found the Motorola Moto E4 to perform competitively, thanks to resources it comes packed with. Moto E4 is run by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.4GHz. This is paired with 2GB of RAM to ensure the phone never hangs while you are running even heavier games. Multitasking capabilities are great thanks to the recent Android 7.1 Nougat it comes with. As a norm of Motorola, there is no skin running on top of the Android Operating System, allowing users to enjoy a stock Android version.

A great feature on the Motorola Moto E4, which is also evident on other Motorola flagships is the fingerprint scanner which doubles up as a navigation utility. Once switched on in the settings; swiping right will bring up recent apps, swiping left takes you back, touching it takes you to home, touching it unlocks the phone if it had been locked initially, and holding it down will bring up Google Assistant.

The Moto E4 is packed with several connectivity options starting with the micro USB connector for attaching to your PC. The 4G LTE option guarantees fast and robust network connection with speeds of more than 21Mbps. The phone is available for several networks including CDMA, GSM, and LTE bands. Typical connection features that it supports include Bluetooth 4.1 and Wi-Fi. For location services, a fast GPS chip is embedded.
