While most phones are advancing in specifications, few companies consider increasing the battery capacity. LG stands out by coupling a massive 4100mAh battery and quick charge into the aptly named X Power. Even with a huge battery, the phone still maintains a smooth design. Not only does the phone offer a full day usage but also high-end specs like a high-performance octa-core processor, a decent 8MP camera, a 5.3-inch HD screen, and the recent Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Interestingly, the phone comes at a price that you will love.
Currently, the LG X Power is available from Sprint Wireless. The packaging includes the LG X Power, wall adapter charger, standard USB cable, phone manuals and a quick setup guide. A SIM plate remover tool is included since your SIM card will be inserted from the sides of the phone and not after removing the back cover. Let's find out what's under the hood.
LG X Power is a budget smartphone with a quite premium design. This is noticeable from the chrome plated frame and the textured back cover that feels quite nice in hand. It's quite large, coming in at 5.3-inches but the slim and sleek design makes it possible to operate even with one hand. Additionally, the textured back cover gives a firm grip, so no worrying about the device slipping out of your hand.
To the front, you are going to find the 5.3-inch display. At the bottom of the display, you will find the floating navigation buttons as well as the LG Branding on the bottom bezel. To the top of the screen are the ambient light sensor, earpiece, and the front facing camera.
Going on to the frame of the LG X Power, we have a 3.5mm headphone jack, microUSB/charging port, and your microphone hole. To the left of the device are the volume rockers as well as the slots for the NanoSIM card and the microSD card. The top of the device only contains the noise cancellation microphone hole. To the right of the LG X Power is the power/lock button.
The back panel is a textured non-removable back cover. It has a branded LG logo at the center while the camera and the LED flash are on the top left corner. The hands-free speaker is on the bottom left of the back cover.
For a budget smartphone, I find the LG X Power to possess some pretty decent cameras. It features an 8-megapixel rear shooter and a 5-megapixel front shooter. The camera app user interface is similar to what you would find in certain LG flagship devices like the LG G4 or LG G5. It does look great with all camera controls showing up on the left and right - easily accessible by your fingers. It does have the simple mode and the pro mode that you are allowed to choose depending on what you want to achieve. Panorama and Auto mode are also included.
The LG X Power supports voice and gesture commands, and also it will allow setting a timer if you plan to be a part of the group photo. Using your voice, you can say phrases like ‘Cheese,' or ‘Whiskey’ to automatically capture a photo. The front camera supports the gesture shot where you raise your hand in a clenched or open palm, and the camera automatically captures.
The back camera records 1080p videos at 30fps which is quite impressive. During a video capture, you can also take pictures by pressing the capture button. A LED flash is available on the back to facilitate shooting photos in limited light conditions.
The front shooter takes clear and decent photos outdoors because of good lighting. Since there's no LED flash on the front, you should expect pictures to be dull in low light conditions. Nevertheless, it shoots 720p videos making it perfect for personal shots and video calls.
A 5.3-inch HD display is what the LG X Power offers. Being a budget smartphone, I didn't expect the screen to be as bright. I was impressed to find out how bright the screen was. The screen boasts a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and a pixel density of 277ppi which are entirely sufficient for a budget smartphone. At this resolution, it will play 1080p videos smoothly.
The battery is impressive. It's not every day you get an all-day lasting battery on a budget smartphone. The LG X Power boasts a massive 4100mAh battery. This is by far the best performing phone in battery life I have seen in the budget smartphones that I have tested. LG rates it at 33 hours of talk time and up to 37 days on standby. Even flagship devices don't go that far.
I believe LG packed excellent power capability in the battery because it's non-removable - meaning, you won't be able to swap with another battery. The battery clocked two days on average, and I believe it could go up to three days with moderate use. The phone surprisingly supports quick charge. With just 20 minutes of charging with a compatible charger, you are likely to get a full day's juice. Overall, the battery scored 100%.
You wouldn't expect a 16GB internal storage on a device at this price line. Me neither. But that's exactly what the LG X Power offers. I find this to be quite impressive. Even without installing a microSD card, you could have a lot of data on the phone. Interestingly, the phone supports external memory expansion up to 2TB with a microSD card. This is double the storage capacity on my PC; I could easily transfer all my movies to the microSD card and have all my data with me on the go. Again, the LG X Power scores awesomely on storage.
The performance is incredible. I can say the LG X Power is the best performing device at this price point, just under $110 from Sprint Wireless. The features it packs are impressive, like what you would find on a flagship gadget. The phone is powered by a high-performance Octa-core processor clocked at 1.8GHz. This means robust multitasking and amazing graphics at super-fast speeds. It has a runtime memory of 2GB RAM which is so far the best on budget smartphones. This will keep all your apps running smoothly even with several apps open in the background.
LG X Power comes running the recent Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The top features of Android Marshmallow like Google Now on Tap and Smart shortcuts is what you get. The ample onboard memory guarantees smooth navigation through app screens and extra smooth animations throughout the operating system.
Top of the line connectivity features are packed in the LG X Power. You get to enjoy the speeds of 4G LTE which mean better browsing and video streaming experience. The phone is capable of mobile hotspot so you can share your internet with your PC easily. Regular features like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are also available. To be aware of the surrounding, the phone has certain sensors included such as proximity, accelerometer, and compass. Overall, the performance of the LG X Power is incredible.
