What we love

  • High-speed internet with 4G LTE
  • Powerful Quad-core processor
  • Long battery life
  • Hearing Aid Compatible

Alcatel Pop Nova A520L is an entry level 4-inch smartphone running Android 4.4 KitKat and powered by a quad-core processor. It's a CDMA phone and works with the Verizon network, so you will need to have Verizon coverage in your home area for the phone to work. One impressive thing about the phone is its 4G LTE capability, despite it being an entry level phone.

Alcatel OneTouch Pop Nova A520L is a prepaid smartphone available from the Straight Talk website. It comes in a Straight Talk box with Straight Talk plans inscribed on. Included in the box are the device, a wall adapter, a standard USB cable, quick reference guides, an activation card, and headsets. Setting up the phone is quick, in fact, I was done setting it up in under 5 minutes.

The Alcatel OneTouch Pop Nova A520L is a 4-inch device with slightly rounded corners. The external design is quite typical; so it’s easy getting your way around it. The power button together with the earphone jack are at the upper side of the device. Volume buttons are on the right-hand side of the device. Your mic and USB port are at the lower part of the device.

Coming to the front we have the 4-inch display. The three navigation buttons at the bottom of the screen are the recent apps button on the right side, the home button at the center and the back button on the left. The back cover holds a 5-MP camera with a LED flash, and also the main speaker. The back cover can be removed to show the battery and the microSD slot. The battery is also removable.

Alcatel OneTouch Pop Nova A520L comes with a 5MP back camera and a 0.3MP front camera. The back camera has a LED flash so you can take some shots in low light environments. It can capture videos, and you can as well apply filters on photos taken. The front camera though short on pixels comes in handy when you need to take selfies.

Alcatel OneTouch Pop Nova A520L has a 4-inch display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels. It's very compact and perfect for one-handed operations; also, it's not so small that you won't see items on the screen. Considering it is an entry level gadget, picture and video quality is average.

Battery life on the Alcatel OneTouch Pop Nova A520L is impressive. With a capacity of 2000mAh, the battery gives you a talk time of up to 14 hours and 15 days of standby. It's a phone you can go a day performing typical operations without having to find a charging outlet. The battery is removable so you can as well carry a spare battery if you are planning on camping out for days.

Alcatel OneTouch Pop Nova A520L ships with 4GB of internal memory. Now, that may seem small, but it does hold many applications. If you run out of storage space, you can expand the capacity with an external microSD card of up to 32GB.

Out of the box, the phone comes running Android 4.4 KitKat. It's powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon Cortex-A53 Quad-core processor running at 1.2GHz. Onboard is 1GB of RAM. One impressive thing about the phone is the availability of Adreno 306 GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). That's one feature I would really love to have on an entry level device. What it means is that gameplay is smooth, and playing videos is also enhanced.

I enjoy watching content on YouTube and playing a few games I downloaded from Playstore. With 4G LTE capability, the internet speed on this device is amazing. As long as you are still within your Straight Talk data plan, pages load in seconds with little to no buffering on YouTube. The phone comes already installed with several Google apps like Gmail, Maps, and Hangouts. You can still download hundreds of apps from Google Play Store.

I didn't find any issues with the performance. The recent apps button brings in an element of multitasking. The animations when switching between apps had no noticeable lag thanks to the Adreno GPU and the RAM. Overall, the performance was ideal for an entry level phone.
Other connectivity features on the phone include Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi, Hotspot, and GPS for location services. It has an accelerometer for controlling phone actions by tilting or shaking.
